In the heart of La Marina , at a height of 275 metres and only a few kilometres from the sea , rises the town of Benissa . It`s excellent climate has made it an excellent place to stay .
It is a delight to take a walk in the town´s perfectly conserved historic centre and discover the great macro-museum formed by the buildings . It seems to take us into another time , with cobbled alleys , walls hundreds of years old , Moorish trellis work, heraldic shields and ancient manorial homes .
According to the Arabic scholar Mª Jesus Rubiera : " Benissa is a town founded by the Arabs , it`s name is Arabic and comes from the family of Banu Issa ( the sons of Isa ) , whose founder was Isa " . There is no documentary or archeological evidence of the existence of a population before the Arabs in Benissa or it`s municipal districts.
Cut into the cliffs along the four kilometres of coastline are coves of transparent and quiet water ( La Fustera , Pinets , la Llobella , Advocat , Baladrar ... ) . Benissas bays are excellent for underwater sports including diving and underwater photography. Fishing is carried out on thr Platja l´ Advocat beach where there is a small quay for sailing boats .
Rural districts such as Pinos , at the foot of the Bernia mountain range , or Pedramala near the coast , show the contrasts of landscapes offered by Benissa . The Sierra de Bernia is the ideal backdrop for mountain walking .
Benissa is cosmopolitan and offers a coexistence for everybody to enjoy . Taste the delicious seafood and agricultural products in the restaurants located at the coast or try the traditional and indigenous meals of Benissa at the bars and restaurants in the Historical Centre .
